Who is Nicole?
Nicole Landey is Pod 1 operating out of Benoni on Johannesburg’s east rand. She is the owner of Nikolorum Design Partners and a below-the-line graphic designer by trade. Her career began at the AAA School of Advertising in Johannesburg 23 years ago where she specialised in below-the-line design and communications.
She is the eldest of four siblings, a mother of Taylor-Ann and Daniel, a published author and an avid Sci-Fi fan who sews, paints, loves good conversation and literature. Her favourite destinations are Paris and Simonstown. She has bungeed, illegally graffiti-ed something, marched in protest, had lunch with Madiba, cries in movies, laughs loudly and expresses discontent demonstratively. She stands for principle, good manners and intellect, but dislikes nay-sayers, ill-discipline and prejudice. She loves sushi, winter fires, history and philosophy. The no-no list includes gerkins, cheap coffee and flip flops. She enjoys both rock and classical equally, is a true creative at heart and loves her career.
A quick summary her career:
Over the years she has had the privilege of working in mainstream advertising agencies where she got her first taste of the ad industry as a lowly junior working her way up the ladder; niche advertising studios under the mentorship of the gurus; and large in-house design studios as creative lead and now her own boss with Nikolorum Design Partners.
She has been recogised and awarded many times throughout her career, beginning as a student and the latest accolade won in France for long-time client Europcar South Africa. A few of the more recognisable pieces she has in her personal portfolio are the kulula.com plane designs like Flying 101, This Way Up and the current liveries seen in our skies; the SLOW Lounges – the airport transit lounges with unforgettable distinction; and bringing Tempest Car Hire back to life with quirk and local humour.
Over the past 2 decades, Nicole has had a hand in flying the brand flags high of well-known names like Pantene, Head & Shoulders, Olay, Pampers, Wella, Vanish, Bayer, Beares, Wetherleys, kulula.com, British Airways, Europcar, SmartStart, Veterans for Wildlife, Jacaranda FM, as well as international brands like Rooks Rider Solicitors and The Beavis Morgan Group LLP in London and Metforce in Sydney, to name a few.
What’s next for Nicole?
Nicole’s diverse career has seen her move out of the traditional graphic design into brand, strategy and innovation, and as the world demands more and more from designers with strategic forward-thinking, quality of design, practical innovation, real-life approach and candid demeanor.
